The original Mac floppy disk format was MFS, for Macintosh File System, and it is only used for 400K single-sided floppies – the only kind of floppy drive supported by the original Macintosh, the Mac 512K Fat Mac, and the Lisa 2 (a.k.a. Macintosh XL). These drives had a variable speed motor that allowed the Mac to pack 400K into a disk that would only hold 360 KB on a fixed-speed drive.

The process is a bit fiddly, but you soon get used to it. What it means is that Mac users are no longer reliant on having two working classic Macs at home (so one can be used to help recover the other) – any OS X machine with a USB floppy drive should be up to the task.

I just got LaCie USB Pocket Foppy drive today, to use with a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.3.4. Unfortunately, even though I exhaustively researched the available USB floppy drives for Mac, I never came across anything that said the LaCie doesn't support double-sided (2DD) Mac formatted disks, only high-density (2HD).

May 13, 2008 · They have a built-in SuperDrive floppy drive, capable of working with 400k, 800k, and 1.4 MB Mac floppies, and (with proper OS support) floppy disks from other platforms. They can run off of OS 7.6.1, so that MFS floppies (usually 400k) can be read. (If writing MFS floppies is on your agenda, you will want older Macs than any of these.)
