So now with Lync Server Microsoft does support the use of wildcard entries in certificates, but in limited use and only when configured in certain ways. On the surface the only mention of this huge shift in support policy within the official Lync TechNet documentation is a single statement on the Certificate Requirements for External Access page.

Feb 24, 2013 · Do you request the certificate for Lync Edge server or Reverse Proxy? The Edge server didn't support wildcard certificate with asterisk in the SN or SAN. But the Reverse Proxy support the wildcard certificate.

Oct 12, 2015 · Therefor make use of SAN wildcard only. Some other interface like the internal Edge NIC for example do never support a wildcard, also not if this is defined optional. If you follow a simple advice, make use for wildcard certificates ONLY on the Reverse Proxy and NOT on the internal / Edge servers at anytime. As reference: Lync 2010:

Hence it is still best practice to avoid wildcard-only entries for the server FQDNs in any new Lync Server deployments. Realistically the addition of wildcard support is target more towards future Office 365 support for Lync Phone Edition and this is the first step in achieving that.
