    5. Advanced ECC (Lockstep) Mode. In Advanced ECC (Lockstep) mode, the two channels closest to the processor (CH 0 & 1) are combined to form one 128-bit channel. This mode supports Single Device Data Correction (SDDC) for both x4- and x8-based memory modules.

Should I use bios "Advanced ECC" in Dell PowerEdge R710 ...

    https://serverfault.com/questions/387736/should-i-use-bios-advanced-ecc-in-dell-poweredge-r710-bios-with-ecc-dimms
I have a Dell PowerEdge R710 with dual Intel Xeon E5503 CPUs. It has 96GB(12x8GB) of ECC DIMMs. In its BIOS, memory is configured for "Advanced ECC". My question is if my DIMMs are already ECC, does it make sense to enable this "Advanced ECC" mode in BIOS or should I switch to "Optimized"? Dell describes these modes as such:

Advanced Memory Protection options are configured in RBSU. If the requested AMP mode is not supported by the installed DIMM configuration, the server boots in Advanced ECC mode. For more information, see "HP ROM-Based Setup Utility." The server also can operate in independent channel mode or combined channel mode (lockstep).

Jul 11, 2014 · Lockstep Mode. The scalable memory buffer has the possibility to distribute cache lines between the two channels. Half of a cache line is than located on a DIMM of one channel and the other half is located on the other channel. In particular, only one memory channel is driving an Intel®SMI2 link, as opposed to two in independent channel mode.Author: Thomas Willhalm
