Sound support in the Linux kernel was originally written by Hannu Savolainen. Hannu then went on to develop the Open Sound system, a commercial set of sound drivers sold by 4Front Technologies that is supported on a number of Unix systems. Red Hat Software sponsored Alan Cox to enhance the kernel sound drivers to make them fully modular.

The Linux kernel also supports the SCSI port provided on some sound cards (e.g., ProAudioSpectrum 16) and the CD-ROM interface provided on the Soundblaster Pro and SoundBlaster 16. For those who do not (yet) have sound hardware, there are a couple of other options.

To enable ALSA support you need at least to build the kernel with primary sound card support (CONFIG_SOUND). Since ALSA can emulate OSS, you don’t have to choose any of the OSS modules. Enable “OSS API emulation” (CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL) and both OSS mixer and PCM supports if you want to run OSS applications with ALSA.

We hope Microsoft add the support in the future version of WSL. You should be able to encourage them by upvoting the following UserVoice topic: Sound card & ALSA support
