The USB Scanner driver is capable of supporting just about any scanner. However meaningful output depends on the availability of a suitable user space tool, such as SANE, see http://www.mostang.com/sane. If your scanner is not automatically associated with the scanner driver, you have two options.

Oct 27, 2006 · If your distribution uses static device nodes, take a look at SANE’s README.linux file for more information on how to manually fix permissions and allow non-root users to access the scanner. Just to be sure that users other than root can access the scanner, run scanimage -L as the non-root user you previously added to the scanner group after you reboot; the output should be the same as before.

Sep 23, 2014 · The Sane backend also supports a huge variety of scanners, including a multitude of older scanners that use SCSI connections. In Windows, support for older scanners has been dropped completely especially in new versions of Windows. Thankfully in GNU/Linux we can still use this hardware that still functions just fine.
