A. Intel or AMD Dual core support is included in Linux kernel itself. You don’t have to install or apply any patch. However you need to install SMP kernel in order to activate dual core support. First run following command to see if dual core kernel installed or not: $ uname -r OR $ uname –a Output. 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp

If your system contains more than one CPU, or a Hyperthreaded or Dual Core CPU, you should select the multiprocessor option for the Linux kernel in order to take advantage of the additional processors. Unless you do, you will be wasting the other processors by not using them at all. Enable multiprocessing:

Hence the need for CPU hotplug support in the Linux kernel. A more novel use of CPU-hotplug support is its use today in suspend resume support for SMP. Dual-core and HT support makes even a laptop run SMP kernels which didn’t support these methods.

Apr 01, 2007 · However I'm not running Windows but Archlinux, and plan to install Archlinux on that new computer too. Will the standard kernel that comes with Archlinux offer the same advantages when using a dual core processor? Or do I need to do something special like getting an alternative kernel, to have dual core support? Thanks.

Ubuntu's kernel supports multiple CPU for a long time now, does not really mater if its multi-core or multiples CPUs in one system, they will be handled perfectly.. One thing you have to be aware of though, just because a system has support for several CPUs/cores and those are present in a system it does not mean your applications will automatically run faster.
