Jul 02, 2010 · I'm building a Linux based NAS. So far I got two 1TB WDC drives and the mini itx case. I'm debating between getting a mobo with built in RAID controller and getting the mobo and controller separately, as PCI card. My biggest concern now is the support for hardware RAID on Linux. How does it look like in practice?

Jan 31, 2002 · Linux does support many hardware RAID adapters. The problem is your Promise RAID controller is not a hardware RAID controller. It is basically an ATA-100/133 IDE controller with a few extra functions and a software driver and bios that handles RAID.

Hardware RAID support is not available on the HP xw4550, since only SAS RAID is supported on HP Linux workstations. The xw4550 only supports SATA drives, and SATA RAID support is not available.
