The problem had nothing to do with drivers. I'm leaving this question and answer here in case someone else searching for Intel H57 / DH57JG eSATA support finds it: Your board is supported by Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, no special drivers necessary.. In my case, it's a build quality issue with the desktop (not the first I've had with this machine, not very happy with the vendor).
