I think with regards to the htaccess files, the syntax may differ compared with apache - but at least we have its support (unlike lighty!) I reckon Nginx is mature enough to lighten up WHM and cPanel .

lighttpd doesn't support .htaccess files like Apache httpd does. That's where the "light" in "lighttpd" comes into play. You can, however, migrate these rules from Apache httpd's mod_rewrite to lighttpd's mod_rewrite.But be aware that the NC flag (case-insensitive matching) is not supported by lighttpd's mod_rewrite. Jun 01, 2011 · As for htaccess, AFAIK they are mostly used for rewrite rules, to which both nginx and lighttpd provide modules. Now, said modules do not use htaccess files but you're able to replicate functionality of htaccess files. Nginx and lighttpd might be light webservers, but this does not mean that they are not suitable for "normal" hosting as you put it.
