SR-IOV and PCI Passthrough on KVM. vSRX on KVM supports single-root I/O virtualization interface types.SR-IOV is a standard that allows a single physical NIC to present itself as multiple vNICs, or virtual functions (VFs), that a virtual machine (VM) can attach to. SR-IOV combines with other virtualization technologies, such as Intel VT-d, to improve the I/O performance of the VM.

SR-IOV. FortiGate-VMs installed on KVM platforms support Single Root I/O virtualization (SR-IOV) to provide FortiGate-VMs with direct access to physical network cards. Enabling SR-IOV means that one PCIe network card or CPU can function for a FortiGate-VM as multiple separate physical devices.

Dec 02, 2009 · What is SR-IOV? 2 Dec 2009 · Filed in Education. ... At this time, SR-IOV support is only found in some of the open source Linux kernels; this means it will find its way into KVM and Xen first. I do not have a timeframe for SR-IOV support in VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V.

To enable SR-IOV on a KVM guest, define a pool of virtual function (VF) devices associated with a physical NIC and automatically assign VF devices from the pool to PCI IDs. For SR-IOV with Intel 10GB network interfaces (ixgbe driver), the driver version must be 4.2.5 or later to support multiple queues for each NIC interface.4.5/5

The SR-IOV drivers are implemented in the kernel. The core implementation is contained in the PCI subsystem, but there must also be driver support for both the Physical Function (PF) and Virtual Function (VF) devices. An SR-IOV capable device can allocate VFs from a PF.

Jul 31, 2014 · In the end: KVM, PCI passthrough and SR-IOV works fine on Proxmox when using Intel network card (at least the VMs can boot and I can find the card in the VM lspci output). For some (still unknown) reason vfio does not populate the iommu_group in the VF when using Mellanox card.

SR-IOV Virtual Functions (VFs) can be assigned to virtual machines by adding a device entry in <hostdev> with the virsh edit or virsh attach-device command. However, this can be problematic because unlike a regular network device, an SR-IOV VF network device does not have a permanent unique MAC address, and is assigned a new MAC address each time the host is rebooted.
