Inotify does not support recursively watching directories, meaning that a separate inotify watch must be created for every subdirectory. Inotify does report some but not all events in sysfs and procfs. Notification via inotify requires the kernel to be aware of all relevant filesystem events, ...

Aug 24, 2016 · @garveen unfortunately, the linux kernel implementation of SMB (in ./fs/cifs) does not support inotify. There are various comments in the code that the older dnotify once was supported (and it is marked as experimental) but none of the code calls into the fsnotify API.. UPDATE: I think the above refers to the Linux SMB server being able to generate SMB change notification from inotify events.

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31686130/does-tail-f-always-use-inotify
No, tail -f does not always use inotify. inotify is not always available. Even if your kernel supports it, only a limited number of handles are available for watching files with inotify, and they may be in use somewhere else. Moreover, if any file in the list of names passed to tail is not on a local filesystem, polling will be used ...

Nov 20, 2014 · I know we have libinotify of which I unfortunately do not know how to use, but I am curious if inotify will be slated to be built into the FreeBSD kernel. I'm not sure who could even answer this question. In my particular situation I am running FreeBSD with MiniDLNA. Unfortunately the library of media will not refresh when a changes occurs because MiniDLNA is looking for an inotify event to ...
