Feb 18, 2019 · Microsoft has recently announced dropping IE<11 support completely in January 2020, including on Windows Server & Embedded versions. IE 11 will be made available to those supported systems that only had access to Internet Explorer 10 until now. It seems jQuery 4.0 might be where we'd like to drop IE<11 support.

In my case, it started working when I went back to an older version of jquery. with jquery 2.2.3 it would show '$ is not defined' even when I wasn't running in compatibility mode. I switched it to 1.11.3 and it worked like a charm.

I'm working on a Bootstrap 3 site and I was having some issues with the jQuery version that I was using (1.9.1). I upgraded to 2.1.0 and my issues are gone, however, this breaks IE8 compatibility since 2.1.0 doesn't support IE8 anymore and jQuery seizes to work in this browser.
