Jan 25, 2008 · Generally speaking, we recommend using the latest version available: Java 6. You can use Java 5 as well, since that's supported by IBM until Sept 2012. At least, that was their desupport date for Java 5 the last time I looked. You should confirm that with IBM, though; I don't monitor IBM's changes in desupport dates closely. Regards, Steven

Background. This is not as immediately obvious to figure out as you would think. First off, while Oracle has stopped public support of Java 6 as of Feb 2013 but with Premier support going out to Dec 2013 and Extended support going to Dec 2016 there is a bit of a long tail. On top of that there is Sustaining support which could go on for ever.
