If you're running a 2.4 kernel, I don't believe the linode kernels have device mapper patched in. The 2.6 kernels appear to have it enabled however. If you type cat /proc/devices, look for an entry like "254 device-mapper" under block devices. If that's not there, you don't have DM.

Like above, but <device>, <filesystem type> and <filesystem options> are determined by looking at the current mounts. --add-device <device> Bring up <device> in initramfs, <device> should be the device name. This can be useful in hostonly mode for resume support when your swap is on LVM or an encrypted partition.
