Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) is the network layer protocol in the IPX/SPX protocol suite. IPX is derived from Xerox Network Systems' IDP. It may act as a transport layer protocol as well. The IPX/SPX protocol suite was very popular through the late 1980s into the mid-1990s because it was used by the Novell NetWare network operating system.

Jan 15, 2016 · Trying to install the IPX protocol on windows vista or later ONLY APPLIES to games coded for the early versions of windows, where TCP/IP was not yet a standard protocol. It does NOT APPLY to DOS games, which you are probably running in the DosBox emulator. Emulators are what we now call Virtual machines, and Dosbox is pretty smart.

Novell also offers Internet Protocol (IP) support in the form of User Datagram Protocol (UDP)/IP encapsulation of other Novell packets, such as SPX/IPX packets.

Dec 20, 2015 · As of Windows Vista MS dropped IPX support. vDos relies on Windows for file/network operations, so it can’t do IPX neither. Feb 07, 2007 · Maybe Novell will provide a backward compatibility module, but if MS don't support it, it means you need some kind of relationship with Novell to get support anyway. If you merely got a game which has IPX as its sole protocol for LAN play, your game developer is unlikely to upgrade it - rather spend the dev time on the new game!
