In both cases, calling curl --interface ppp0 ifconfig.co as root works and returns the IP address of the VPN connection, but I cannot execute the command as any other non-root user. The command curl --interface eth1 ifconfig.co works fine as root or a normal user.

Thank you for your answer but it still doesn't work. As a matter of fact it is the ping via the ppp interface that uses the enp1s0 interface whereas the curl command succeeds in using both interfaces and this was already the case with my old configuration. – john Dec 21 '16 at 12:10

I did not say that dhclient does not work (in general), or that it does not support PD. Issues with dhclient are mainly with how does it work over ppp0 (ppp tunnel). In short, ppp0 is special interface, and it seems that dhclient is _unable_ to generate proper duid.

Nov 11, 2016 · I do have a Realtek NIC on the WAN interface. And an additional Intel 82574L for the LAN. Changing to an Intel NIC is not a viable solution ATM; this machine has only one expansion I think... I may be able to swap them, though. I did follow the rule regarding fixed speed on the interface, though, and also changed the modem.

You can verify with tcpdump - if you see traffic leaving the ppp0 interface but no return then it's likely the ppp peer. If you see no traffic then check the iptables settings. tcpdump -n ip host 208.85.40.20
