In IntelliJ 2017.2.4 I just closed the project and reopened it and I got a dialog asking me if I wanted to link with build.gradle which opened up the import dialog for Gradle projects. No need to delete any files or add the idea plugin to build.gradle .

If I tell IntelliJ to import a new project, and point it to my project directory, it does not recognize it as a Grails project. After the project imports, I can go to the Project menu, right click on the project and go to "add Framework support..." and select Groovy, but IntelliJ still does not recognize my project as a Grails project.

Sep 24, 2012 · The only way I found to add groovy to an existing project is to create a new File then give it a.groovy extension. At that point IntelliJ does helpfully offer to configure a SDK (with the option to create a new one with a different version). How could I add the SDK without having to give a file the.groovy extension though?
