I am looking at buying a new machine. It seems that the fastest I7 chips don't have VT-D support on them. If I get a machine that does not support VT-D what am I missing out on - what can't I do that Intel VT-D would give? Also what are the requirements if I want to virtualize ESXi 5.0 within itself. So have Esxi run as a guest for experimentation.

Mar 17, 2012 · An HP 3300MT with VT-D enabled in the bios running a i5 2400 CPU(Supports VT-D as per intel site). This system cannot use passthrough(No idea why). The option is greyed out. I'd like to passthrough anything I can as a test. The goal is to have ONE VM on an esxi machine which passes through a PCI card to it.

Do I need vt-d for ESXi. I want to build a really cheap ESXi home server that will run pfSense and Ubuntu on ESXi. Since I'm a newbie do I need vt-d support for pfSense? I will have a dual port NIC that pfSense is going to Load Balance and redistribute through the motherboard LAN port to a switch.
