List of IOMMU-supporting hardware - Wikipedia

64 rows · The vast majority of Intel server chips of the Xeon E3, Xeon E5, and Xeon E7 product lines support VT-d. The first—and least powerful—Xeon to support VT-d was the E5502 launched Q1'09 with two cores at 1.86 GHz on a 45 nm process. Many or most Xeons subsequent to this support VT-d.

Does My Processor Support Intel® Virtualization Technology?

Note: A processor with Intel® Virtualization Technology doesn't guarantee that virtualization works on your system. Intel® Virtualization Technology requires a computer system with a chipset, BIOS, enabling software and/or operating system, device drivers, and applications designed for this feature.

If intel_iommu=on or amd_iommu=on works, you can try replacing them with iommu=pt or amd_iommu=pt. The pt option only enables IOMMU for devices used in passthrough and will provide better host performance. However, the option may not be supported on all hardware.

VT-d, which provides IOMMU services, is a very important feature for realizing the security promises of Qubes OS. Without it, although the CPU isolates VMs, their memory lies open to relatively easy DMA-based attacks, with network devices and GPUs being some of the more well-known pieces of hardware for executing such attacks.

What is IOMMU and will it improve my VM performance?

    https://askubuntu.com/questions/85776/what-is-iommu-and-will-it-improve-my-vm-performance
IOMMU sounds like a generic name for Intel VT-d and AMD IOV. In which case I don't think you can multiplex devices, it's a lot like PCI passthrough before all these fancy virtualization instructions existed :). SR-IOV is different, the peripheral itself must carry the support.

The IOMMU handles this re-mapping, allowing the native device drivers to be used in a guest operating system. In some architectures IOMMU also performs hardware interrupt re-mapping, in a manner similar to standard memory address re-mapping. Peripheral memory paging can be supported by an IOMMU.
