May 03, 2010 · As far as I can tell (I'm not using chat myself), then - Chat (found in lower left of iGoogle) is an integral part of iGoogle and ref. Paul's answer 2/25/10, - it can't be done. But you may be able to find a gadget that support https, - though I'm unsure if any official Google gadget will do the trick.
