In this old StackOverflow post, it was said that only IE6 had issues with PNG favicons, but on channel9, it said that IE7 also does not support PNG favicons either. But, unfortunately, the channel9 link has been deleted - so does anyone know the official/tested information that states which version of IE started to support PNG favicons?

Oct 30, 2007 · While Internet Explorer for Windows 6 (IE6) and previous versions of IE don’t support PNGs’ alpha-transparency feature, all popular browsers can display PNGs. While IE6- doesn’t explicitly support alpha-transparency out-of-the-box, if you will, there is a workaround that ensures PNG’s cross-browser compatibility.

According to W3Schools' Browser Stats, about 98.2% of browsers are IE 7+, FF, Chrome or Opera, which all support PNG format with transparency. So, not quite 99.9%, but pretty close. The stats say about 0.6% of uses have IE6, which suppports PNG without transparency (transparent PNGs in IE6 just have a solid white background).

This is NOT what you would want to use for your production web graphics. So, if you have an unusually large PNG, that might be the reason why. Please correct me if I am incorrect about any of this. note: IE5 and IE6 do not support alpha transparency (PNG-8 alpha, PNG-32 alpha), it may convert it to single index, or it may not display at all.

It's hard to explain what exactly the problem is. People who answer the question think that we want to change the PNG file associations to Windows Explorer or something.
