Jul 12, 2014 · At some point I gave the max-width a value of 1600 em because I am under the impression that the browsers use a standard font-size of 16px, which should give a max-width of 1600px. I experimented in the css with rem, em and px, but there was no change in the widths. When I change the max-width Chrome responds and IE not at all.

I have a similar problem with IE 9 (previous IEs as well I suppose). I have a table with just two columns, one that should be limited to, say 50px, and the other expand the rest of the table. For white-space normal everything works ok, but I need white-space: nowrap. IE just does not want to obey the max-width property in this case.
