IBM printers with a FICON channel adapter, or an ESCON PCI channel adapter with microcode level 9.6 or later, have a multi-host feature that supports multiple concurrent paths to the same printer. When the multi-host feature is enabled, the printer allows only one PSF to use the printer at a time.

ESCON, or Enterprise Systems Connection, is a fiber-optic connection for mainframes and peripheral devices, introduced in the early 1990s to replace copper bus and tag connectors. FICON (Fiber Connectivity) is ESCON's faster, more efficient replacement.

The IBM zEnterprise 196 and IBM zEnterprise 114 are the last System z servers to support ESCON channels. IBM plans to not offer ESCON channels as an orderable feature on System z servers that follow the z196 (machine type 2817) and z114 (machine type 2818). In addition, ESCON channels cannot be carried forward on an upgrade to such follow-on servers.

FICON (Fibre Connection) is the IBM proprietary name for the ANSI FC-SB-3 Single-Byte Command Code Sets-3 Mapping Protocol for Fibre Channel (FC) protocol.
