The stock cam support plate does a decent job of supporting the camshafts and directing oil, but it can flex and warp under prolonged severe operation and high valvespring pressures. A wobbling pinion shaft will score or even break the oil pump housing and gerotor gears, since the pump is mounted over the shaft.
