Software vertex processing provides a guaranteed set of vertex processing capabilities, including an unbounded number of lights and full support for programmable vertex shaders. You can toggle between software and hardware vertex processing at any time when using the hardware device, the only device type that supports both hardware and software vertex processing.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/display/reporting-support-for-programmable-vertex-processing-hardware
For a DirectX 8.0 level driver to report support for programmable vertex shader hardware it must set the VertexShaderVersion field of the D3DCAPS8 structure to a valid, nonzero vertex shader …

The driver for hardware that does not support programmable vertex processing should process D3DDP2OP_SETVERTEXSHADER to determine the FVF code (and hence the processing to be performed) on the vertex data bound to stream zero. This is particularly important when processing user memory (UM) primitives.

May 13, 2009 · 2) Almost all cards there days have hardware vertex support. It refers to the capability of the graphic cards to process vertices in hardware instead on the CPU. Some cards like older Intel integrated gpu had only the pixel processing in hardware, but the vertex processing in software.

Hardware vertex processing means this is done in hardware, if the hardware supports it; ergo, Software vertex processing is done is software. The general practice is to try creating a Hardware T&L device first, and if that fails try Mixed, and if that fails try Software. (If software …

Feb 05, 2010 · In software mode your CPU works a little more than if vertex were processed by the graphic card but since you run a 3.6 GHZ CPU that doesn't really change anything. Your CPU is more than able to cope with the supplementary load as it is already way beyond the requirements for the game.

Jun 16, 2013 · When I launch the game, I get this message: Our apologies but you need video card with hardware vertex processing to run this game. I don't want to be scolded by you for giving 3 bucks to the evil corporate machine. I just want to know if there is a fix for this problem, or if I just can't play the game. I've got an i7 @ 3.8, GTX 660, 16GB ram, Win8 ːp2cubeː

Jun 21, 2006 · Rise and Fall Demo currently requires a video card that supports hardware vertex processing. It couldn't be much more explicit why you can't run the game. Your video cared does not support vertex processing, and that is required to run the game. There is a list of supported cards on this site, and the Midway site.

Nov 01, 2011 · The only times you'll ever want to use software vertex processing are A) if you need to use a vertex shader model specification higher than what the card currently supports, or B) you're using debug tools that require it. Otherwise, use hardware processing and on top of that prefer 'pure' hardware vertex processing for a performance boost.
