GRUB and my own rEFInd are the two exceptions to this rule. The trick with rEFInd is that it includes no XFS support; however, there is an XFS driver for EFI available in the efifs package. Thus, installing both rEFInd and the XFS driver from efifs should work. The trick is that you'll need to do this at least somewhat manually and from an ...

Nov 03, 2010 · GRUB-Support is in an early stage, therefore using xfs as boot-filesystem can be a bad idea ; The journal is currently not 32-bit / 64-bit portable. Q: Does GRUB work with XFS? There is native XFS filesystem support for GRUB starting with version 0.91 and onward. Unfortunately, GRUB used to make incorrect assumptions about being able to read a block device image while a filesystem is mounted and actively being written to, which could cause intermittent problems when using XFS.

Jan 05, 2017 · My first attempt to work around this issue was to re-create the XFS filesystem and disabling CRCs (mkfs.xfs -m crc=0). However, in grub-bhyve this resulted in grub either throwing the same inode errors, or magic number errors. Then I decided to ditch XFS and went with ext4, which works solid, at least in the grub-bhyve part.

GRUB last stable release (2.0.2beta) is from 2 years ago, and this is the version that most distributions ship. So, while XFS, for example, was supported back in the time of the release, this filesystem has evolved* in the meantime but GRUB did not follow with a new release. Meaning that GRUB cannot boot from a boot partition that is XFS formatted.
