Aug 08, 2018 · GRE tunnels are designed to be completely stateless. This means that each tunnel endpoint does not keep any information about the state or availability of the remote tunnel endpoint. A consequence of this is that, by default, the local tunnel endpoint router does not have the ability to bring the line protocol of the GRE Tunnel interface down if the remote end of the tunnel is unreachable.

Re: Routers supporting GRE tunnels. Hi, The limitation of the interfaces is bind to the IDB (Interface Descriptor Blocks) limit which is a function of the IOS and the Platform. You can use the show idb command on your platforms to see what the limits will be on your gear.
