I noticed GNOME does not currently support having multi-monitor backgrounds. Nitrogen used to be able to do this, but GNOME3 support seems to have been dropped for now. There is a hack of having several images merged together into one, and then having the merged image span multiple monitors. I've gotten it to work without any flaws.
