Feb 25, 2007 · I am installing Gentoo for the first time. It boots ok, but I get the message that udevd says "the kernel does not support inotify..." Following a previous FAQ of this same subject I found where to change the configuration file to include INOTIFY.

Mar 24, 2007 · udev and inotify. Hello there I am running gentoo and when my computer boots it says that udevd can't do something because inotify is not setup in the kernel, the thing is that it is compiled in the kernel ... then it is indeed compiled into the kernel and it seems to be udev's fault not to see it - I can't help with that. 03-24-2007, 01:18 PM ...

Sometimes "main: the kernel does not support inotify, udevd can't monitor configuration file changes" from udevd apear in my logs, but I always had CONFIG_INOTIFY=y CONFIG_DNOTIFY=y in my kernels. What triggers it ?--

Inotify was created by John McCutchan, and it was merged into the Linux kernel mainline in kernel version 2.6.13, released on August 29, 2005; later kernel versions ...

Ok, but if udev and /sys mounting can be controlled from /etc/rc.conf. why not to leave this choice to the admin, while the default could be not to use udev and /sys for openvz and vserver. I'm using both udev and /sys for a couple of weeks with openrc-0.2.5. and did not have any issues with such setup.

* source. Valid sources identifiers are "udev" and "kernel". * * Applications should usually not connect directly to the * "kernel" events, because the devices might not be useable * at that time, before udev has configured them, and created * device nodes. Accessing devices at the same time as udev, * might result in unpredictable behavior.
