Andrew tiene razón, el manual php para imagettftext declara que se requiere FreeType para usar imagettftext, imagettfbox y otros. La mayoría de las personas el paquete de desarrollo GD instalará FreeType automáticamente: Fedora / Redhat: yum install gd gd-devel php-gd.
