The problem appears to be that OpenSSL has already allowed invalid reads by the time that FreeRADIUS detects the invalid heartbeat, and closes the connection. The benefit of the way FreeRADIUS uses OpenSSL is that the attack appears to be limited to reading ~1K of data from the stack, when the server receives the malicious heartbeat.

Note: The freeradius available with CentOS 5.1 repos is freeradius-1.1.3… which comes with openssl support, which is not supported by freeradius.org, but support is only availabe for 1.1.7.x version. Latest version 2.0.5 has newer features but does not have rpm binaries for CentOS 5.x although .src.rpms of 2.0.3 of Fedora 9 do exist.

There's now support for OpenSSL 1.1.0-pre4 support in v3.1.x. This was actually a fair amount of work. OpenSSL has switched to private structs, meaning we have to allocate things like HMAC_CTX on the heap now instead of using the stack.
