For the first time in Firefox 36, the white-space property is being honored for textarea controls. So there's your trouble: "pre" means Firefox should emulate the preformatted tag, which requires manual line breaks. It would be great if you can convince the site to change this to:

Apr 09, 2008 · To clarify one thing: this is a user-to-user support forum. We don't act on feature requests here. The developers seldom stop by, or at least don't identify themselves if they do. Your page is very complex, and there is no word-breaking problem at all. Firefox happily breaks at spaces, but it appears that the styles are not all working together.
