We have an internally written and hosted opensearch plugin which after upgrading to Firefox 7 the suggestions stopped dropping down in the browser. (I don't remember what we were running before) As before when one hits enter it still submits the keyword to the proper page URL.

Either I don't understand how to access the feature, or Firefox is not able to detect websites' OpenSearch. At least for https://thepiratebay.org I know for sure the website advertises the required xml file, but Firefox does not detect it.

Oct 16, 2019 · According to the Firefox release calendar, Firefox 71 is scheduled to be released on that day (Dec 3), so I would expect OpenSearch support to be removed in Firefox 71. (I would expect all previously installed OpenSearch add-ons will be removed / stop working, and no new OpenSearch add-ons can be installed.)
