A patch that adds WTV (Windows Television, the recording format of Windows 7 Media Center) demux support to ffmpeg is now in a mature state, thanks to developer Peter Ross. Gone are the days of circuitous, roundabout conversions from WTV to DVR-MS to MPEG!
ffmpeg already had basic support for these subtitles which ignored all formatting information - it just provided basic plain-text support. Niklesh did work to add support on both the encode and decode side for text formatting capabilities, such as font size/colour and effects like bold/italics, highlighting, etc. ...

One more problem I've seen (in the same wtv file above). when using the ffmpeg command to copy the subtitle stream it converts the subtitles from dvb_teletext to dvb_subtitle (from text to image if I understand correct). Is that normal? Shouldn' it preserve the teletext stream? e.g. ffmpeg -i ncis.wtv

May 25, 2013 · wtv is a container format. MC-TVConverter can transfer the video and audio from a .wtv file to a less proprietary container. I have used it many times for that. It can also convert .wtv recordings to a few other formats. MC-TVConverter won't work on copy protected .wtv files, but unless the recordings were from a paid service, they are unlikely to be copy protected.

Oct 18, 2009 · Update 2014-02-25: As Marc has said in a comment below, ffmpeg now supports wtv files natively, so the dvr-ms step is unnecessary.I no longer use this process at all so I haven’t updated it, but will leave it here for posterity. I use a PlayStation 3 to watch TV programmes recorded in Windows 7.

Summary of the bug: WTV files created by ffmpeg stop playing in WMP and Windows MCE when Microsoft Windows Update KB2670838 is installed. However MCE created WTV files continue to play fine, only ffmpeg created WTV file don't play.

I have tested recently an implementation of ffmpeg for wtv's, probably this same one, and there was no support for h.264 wtv's, only mpeg2. Looking through this code, it seems like this implimentation also does not support h.264 wtv files.
