Since the original tech preview release of FastCGI last year, we've been seeing a lot of requests for getting Ruby on Rails running with our FastCGI. Theoretically, since the FastCGI component uses a standard protocol to support FastCGI-enabled applications, this shouldnt be an issue – but, in practice, this is very far from reality.

Jun 14, 2007 · The fcgiext.ini file is directly read by our IIS 6 FastCGI handler. The reason that you need to restart the worker process that, when I wrote fcgiext.dll, the underlying FastCGI process manager (that Rick wrote) did not support dynamic changes to configuration. Rick has since updated the underlying code, but I have not had a chance yet to catch up.

Rails itself turned out to be far too slow to use without some sort of acceleration (unlike any other web programming environment we support), and FastCGI is by far the best suited to a shared web hosting environment.
