IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is a standard that allows physical layer transmitters to consume less power during periods of low data activity. EEE is always enabled on NETGEAR unmanaged switches that are equipped with EEE.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy-Efficient_Ethernet
Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is a set of enhancements to the twisted-pair and backplane Ethernet family of computer networking standards that reduce power consumption during periods of low data activity. The intention is to reduce power consumption by 50% or more, while retaining full compatibility with existing equipment.

During the link establishment process, both link partners indicate their EEE capabilities. If EEE is supported by both link partners for the negotiated PHY type, then the EEE function may be used independently in either direction. Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) Low Power Idle requires that both link partners support IEEE 802.3az.

Unless otherwise stated, all performance claims are based on theoretical performance. Actual figures may vary in real-world situations. The actual transfer speed of USB 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, and/or Type-C will vary depending on many factors including the processing speed of the host device, file attributes and other factors related to system configuration and your operating environment.

EEE compatibility issues can be confirmed by turning off EEE at the NIC to see if this resolves the issue. Managed switches also support the ability to turn off the EEE feature. If the problem stops with EEE disabled at either end, the likely cause is an EEE compatibility issue.

We do not currently have any released products in our portfolio that support EEE, but we have a GigE PHY with EEE support in development. We are also evaluating development of a 10/100 PHY with EEE support. Note that these products are targeting support for IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet. This is defined by an industry standard.
