Apr 08, 2009 · I agree that hyper-v really isn't in the same class as vmware. Vmware for whatever reason is dragging it's feet. I'd be happy if there was something that said they would support 2008 clustering in esx 4.0, but I can't find that. At this moment- the only software (worth considering) with a roadmap that mentions Server 2008 is Microsoft.

Windows 7 is "Experimental" for vSphere. Windows 2008 R2 will probably be supported in the next minor release. They are usually pretty tight lipped about stuff until it comes out. I wouldn't expect to much official support in ESX 3.5.

Jul 13, 2010 · So far so good. I think I would've been fine with Windows Server 2008 R2 had I not installed the vmware video driver when I first installed the tools. It seems that this is a known issue with ESX 3.5 U4 and earlier having issues with the vmware video driver in 2008 server. This is suppose to be corrected in U5 and higher.
