Western Digital's solution was to disable legacy USB option in BIOS Set up but that option could not be found, so they said I needed a BIOS upgrade. Called HP - as the external hard drive was not purchased from them they will not support any resolution attempt.

Look for a setting called "Boot Mode", "UEFI Boot", "Launch CSM" or whatever else it may be called, change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy/CSM: disable the UEFI Boot option and enable CSM Boot support. Save your changes and exit UEFI Setup. Now you've set a Windows 8 PC to boot with Legacy BIOS mode instead of UEFI mode.

Apr 08, 2005 · With some BIOS's there's a setting to either enable or disable "legacy USB support". What does that mean? Is it related to USB1.1 vs. USB2? Is it related to PnP (plug and play)? I've always read that, for running Linux, I'm supposed to disable PnP (that is, answer "no" to the question in the BIOS, "Is OS Plug-and-play aware?"), so that's what I do.
