Apr 18, 2013 · Yo, I'm working on a kernel project in which I am currently attempting to get IO-APIC support working in Virtual Box. I say "in Virtual Box", because the my code works everywhere else -- on all of the real hardware test cases I have (2 laptops), the Bochs emulator, Qemu and VMWare Player.

Once the guest is shutdown you need to change the settings of the VM. Changing the IO APIC Setting within VirtualBox will not work. It keeps re-enabling the setting. Close VirtualBox and open your guest machine's XML configuration file in a text editor. Find the setting <IOAPIC enabled="true"/> Change value from "true" to "false"

IO APIC *must* be enabled for SMP guests. VirtualBox automatically enables it. -Technologov From VirtualBox manual: "Enabling the I/O APIC is required for 64-bit guest operating systems, especially Windows Vista; it is also required if you want to use more than one virtual CPU in a virtual machine."

This seems to work quite well, but, VirtualBox's IO APIC emulation appears to be a little fragile. It doesn't work at all with windows 2000 and seems to fail on shutdown (sometimes) with windows XP. I would suggest it's best to replace the HAL inside the VM with the non-APIC version as soon as possible so you can disable the emulation.

A standard installation on a modern physical PC or VMware will usually result in Halaacpi.dll being chosen as most systems nowadays have an IO APIC and VMware chose to virtualize it by default (VirtualBox disables the IO APIC because it is more expensive to virtualize than a standard PIC). So as a first step, you either have to enable IO APIC support in VirtualBox or replace the HAL.
