If you just replace the optical SFP’s with twinAX and have problems then EMC support can ask you to change the system back to a supported config. Compatibility isn’t just standards – its also testing and support. Plus the optical SFP’s are part of the system and covered by support in terms of spares.

Dec 22, 2010 · The Brocade CNAs support active twinax from Brocade or EMC’s active twinax cable. If you want to connect a Brocade CNA to a Cisco ToR switch (Nexus), you could use the EMC active twinax cable. Otherwise, you'll need to use optical since the Cisco switch will log an error if you attempt to use the Brocade cable.

Fair enough Chris but EMC/Isilon teams know what their customers are using at least you hope local teams do. I am sure we are not the only customer using Twinax with Isilon so why would developers intentionally drop support for Twinax.

The Brocade CNAs support active twinax from Brocade or EMC’s active twinax cable. If you want to connect a Brocade CNA to a Cisco ToR switch (Nexus), you could use the EMC active twinax cable.

In regard to your concerns about power, I discussed this with a couple of people in our hardware group and you’re right, active twinax does consume more power than passive twinax. In the case of a passive twinax cable, the necessary hardware to support driving the signal is included in the PHY and consume about 100mW per port.
