The above builds ECW support into the core GDAL DLL. Note that ECW v3.3 / libecwj2 was released in 2006, is completely out of date and does not support more recent ECW files. It's also extremely buggy. If you just want to read ECW, build the GDAL driver against an up to date ECW SDK. – user2856 Nov 4 '18 at 23:39

You should try to run gdalinfo under gdb and show the stacktrace when it crashes. It seems very likely that it crashes in the ECW SDK itself. This might be due to using a very recent GCC such as 4.7.2 whereas the ECW SDK code base is aging...
