It was implemented by somehow syncing the playback state to the DVD/BD implementation (in stream_dvdnav.c etc.), and then reloading the demuxer without destroying and recreating the stream. This caused a bunch of special-cases which I'm looking forward to remove. For now, don't just remove everything related to menu support and just disable it.

Tested against 0.9.7 from branch-20081122-0204 and 1.0.0-git-20081117-1737.From GUI Open Disc and select DVD drive (or from Explorer rightclick DVD and "Play with VLC Media player). VLC is unable to read the DVD even with dvdsimple.

Nov 13, 2016 · Support for DVD menus has been removed in mpv. So disable the option to use DVD menus in Preferences -> Drives. If it still doesn't work, select mplayer as multimedia engine in Preferences -> General.

A quick look at the strings in the library shows that libdvdread_plugin.dylib has "Encrypted DVD support unavailable" in the vlc-2.1.2 copy, but not in the vlc-2.1.1, even though these are both ostensibly libdvdread version 4.2.0
