For some reason I don't understand, the calculator app is a snap since Ubuntu 18.04. The snap doesn't provide a search provider, so you can't use it from the activities screen. To fix it, run sudo snap remove gnome-calculator to uninstall the snap version, and sudo apt install gnome-calculator to install the version which works. Not only will it have a search provider; it will also look better and launch faster.
