Oct 25, 2008 · Ultimately though, if I can get jumbo frames to work it will allow me to process more frames for the same CPU load, so my original questions stand. I have been searching a bit through the forums and the release notes. As far as I can tell, VMware Server does not support jumbo frames at all. ESX does, though, since version 3.5 (feb/2008).

The desktop gigabit Ethernet NIC allows jumbo frame configuration, whereas my laptop NIC supports gigabit Ethernet, but does not support jumbo frame configuration. What would be the best way to implement Jumbo Frames on a network? From what I can tell in order for it to work properly all network gear on the network must support Jumbo Frames. Is this true? If I have specific gear (e.g. network printer) that cannot be updated to GB ethernet will this prevent me from enabling Jumbo Frames?

May 19, 2016 · Since jumbo frames are the exception to the rule, they are turned off by default on networking equipment and hosts. This immediately tells you there must be a problem with having them on by default. Not only are jumbo frames turned off on all VLANs, but they are also dropped by default on all interfaces without manual changes.

Dec 10, 2018 · If a server sends a Jumbo frame to a PC but the PC doesn't support Jumbo frames then it may get dropped and TCP will step in to change the TCP window size. This is what TCP does. Does the switch care that all these different endpoints are sending different sized frames. No.
