Oct 28, 2010 · I have resently bought a 1tB hard drive. The saleman told me I have to be ware that many 1tb hard drives do not work with Windows XP, and he helped me to pick one that works with XP. No surprise! it does not work. I have a Dell Dimension E521. The Bio recognized the hard drive as a 1Tb, but XP refused to show it..... Please help me.

Nov 09, 2014 · The root of this is Windows XP x86 is MBR only meaning that the limitation is to do with MBR. Disks exceeding 2TB must use GPT which extends the limit significantly, however Windows XP does not have this support currently. A 32 bit version of windows generally will only see the protective MBR on a GPT disk.

Oct 03, 2010 · It was attached when I installed XP, and Windows Setup recognized it when I picked a drive to install on. It does not show up in My Computer, and Device Manager shows it as working fine. I checked it out in Disk Management and it recognizes the drive, but it shows my whole 1TB partition as unallocated space.

Apr 18, 2008 · XP has very poor native support for SATA drives. To be used, one must either put in a floppy with the controller driver in, or slipstream the driver into the installation CD. XP does "support" them, though, in that they can be used with the correct drivers.

The link is for when WD elements is “not recognized or detected in Windows XP after installation and usage” – but the question from Ross, and myself also, is with a NEW Elements which has never been used.
