Activating NLA on Windows Server 2003 RDP Client. I am trying to connect to a new Windows Server 2008 R2 machine via RDP from a Server 2003 machine. I have (and would like to keep) enabled the requirement for NLA (Network Level Authentication) which is provided in RDP client 6.1. Unfortunately, RDP 6.1 doesn't seem to be available for Server 2003.

Somtime around July 19th my Windows 7 Enterprise (X64) started requiring NLA on remote desktop into my machine. We must do a gpedit and turn off "Require user authentication for remote connection using by using Network Level Authentication.

Till recently… Microsoft has published an update for RDC 6.0 and 6.1, upgrading those versions to the latest build of 6.1. This update is also valid for Windows Server 2003, meaning you can upgrade your RDC 6.0 on WS03 to the latest build of 6.1!

The easiest way to confirm this is to launch the Remote Desktop tool (Start -> Run -> mstsc) in the upper left hand corner of the title bar left click the icon, then left click About. It should show Network Level Authentication supported. under the copyright information.
