Sep 12, 2009 · The OS does not need to access the extra bit, thats used by the memory controller to correct any errors it finds ? At any rate if it does not support it, it will run just fine on ECC ram. Other hardware may give you an issue though.

Mar 28, 2012 · AMD does support ECC on their CPUs, BIOS and motherboard design willing. But it is in their memory-controller. Intel actually goes out of their way to disable the ECC support on their consumer CPUs. Why does Intel care more about its profit margin (from selling "server" CPUs, with ECC), than with the end-user's data-integrity? It's shameful!

The RAM controller has moved into the CPU for both AMD and Intel platforms, so there's nothing the chipset would need to support for ECC. Memory used in desktop computers is neither, for economy. However, unbuffered (not-registered) ECC memory is available, and some non-server motherboards support ECC functionality of such modules when used with a CPU that supports ECC. Registered memory does not work reliably in motherboards without buffering circuitry, and vice versa.

Mar 02, 2017 · The chipset does not have any direct say in ECC support, the memory controller is inside the CPU. All AMD desktop CPUs since the Newcastle Athlon 64, including all Semprons, and all APUs since Trinity have supported ECC as far as I know. (Brazos and Llano didn't.)
