When I plug in external USB drives (harddrives, or thumbdrives), Windows does not seem to recognize the devices. One external harddrive caused Windows to display a popup that said it didn't have the appropriate drivers.

Aug 11, 2012 · The layout follows the one adopted for USB 2.0 in Win2k, whith a primary HUB driver and a protocol driver (for USB 2.0 it was EHCI, for USB 3.0 it's xHCI). For Win 2k, the problem seems to be just with nusb3hub.sys, from what I could understand from Blackwingcat's blog, but that's to be expected, since the hub is always the lowest-level driver.

Besides Windows 95 with the USB update, and Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows XP support Original USB, but Windows NT does not. Windows XP with service packs applied, supports Hi-Speed USB.

Apr 28, 2009 · Windows 2000 SP4 has lost it's mind, and it is causing me to lose mine! Bottom line: I think a recent windows update messed up the USB drivers on my machine. I cannot install simple "plug-and-play" USB devices on the machine. Details follow. I'm not too good with hardware, so I apologize if I provide too much or the wrong information.

Windows 2000 has no native support for SATA drives. If you have a slipstreamed CD with service pack 4, and the drivers for the SATA controller, you can install it. If not, you will have to run the SATA controller in emulation mode, so that Windows 2000 thinks that it is an IDE drive.
