Dec 26, 2014 · If you need to use extended range VLANs and you switch does not support VTPv3, then you would need to set the mode to transparent for VTP, which technically means that you are still using VTP, but you are not learning any VTP information from other VTP enabled devices.

So Cisco added support for vlans following the 802.1Q standard, but for many years an important limitation was present with extended Vlans 1006-4094: they could not be created and propagated by Cisco VTP Vlan trunking protocol. To create a vlan in extended range the switch had to be configured for VTP transparent mode.

Jan 05, 2016 · I know that VTP v1 and v2 do not support extended VLANs and that the switch would need to be in Transparent Mode to be able to configure extended VLANs locally on each switch. VTP v3 supports extended VLANs and propagates them to other switches.
