To remove snapshots in VMware Player, you have to install VMware Workstation (Which you can do as a trial). This is because VMware Player does not support creating or removing snapshots. You might be thinking that VMware Player *must* support snapshots, otherwise how did I get snapshots of my VM in VMware Player?!

Although snapshots provide a point-in-time image of the disk that backup solutions can use, these are not meant to be a robust method of backup and recovery.

VMWare Server only allows one snapshot per VM, so your mention of a "snapshot tree" makes me think that you are thinking about VMWare Workstation, rather than an older version of VMWare Player, as this does support multiple snapshots per VM (as do the paid for server products).
